51st National E Australian Championships 2017

11-Jan-2017
Miss Bling (Elwood Vic), Santoy (Humpybong Qld) and Ruthless (Henley SA) fought an epic battle for victory at the 51st National E Australian Championships held at Wangi Wangi on Lake Macquarie in NSW from 3-7 January 2017.

Just one point separated the leaders until the completion of the final race of 10, when Miss Bling snatched a narrow victory from Santoy closely followed by Ruthless with just 4 points separating first from third. It was a sweet victory for Dan Osinga and Craig Finger in Miss Bling who had let the title slip narrowly away at Yarrawonga in 2016.

The National E is a Jack Holt one design racing dinghy and a consistent wind averaging 15 knots ensured spinnakers were tested to the full while trapezes had a fine work out. There were hotly contested battles right to the finish line with margins of 1 and 2 seconds between some boats in a number of races and the series proving the most competitive of recent years.

This boat is family oriented and a number of boats were crewed by family including Santoy (2nd) with father/son, Petronella (6th) with father/daughter, Victor E (7th) skippered by father with rotating crew of sons and wife, Miss Muffet with grandfather/granddaughter and Miss Teak with husband/wife. The son/father team in Miss Tickle set out full of enthusiasm in their first championships until injury put an untimely early end to their series.

Age proved no barrier to a successful series with Grand Masters Dennis Paton and Peter Humphrey in Firewind (Balmoral NSW) coming 4th overall. Not bad for a crew with a combined age of over 120 years!

The 52nd Championships will be held in Portarlington VIC in January 2018. Details will be posted on Facebook (National E Sailing) and the website www.nationale.org.au
