Tanilba Bay SC OTB Marine Big Boat Regatta

The OTB Marine Big Boat Regatta was held at Tanilba Bay, Port Stephens on the weekend of 17-18 February when visiting catamaran crews from Toukley, Speers Point, Mannering Park, Kurnell, Wallerawang, Queens Lake and Newcastle were given a friendly welcome and stiff opposition from the locals.

A strong fleet of F18s joined the 5.8 Nacras and 5m Maricats to battle 16 foot Taipans and A class cats, including Mark Davies interesting Foiling A Class, Catastrophic.

Starter Steve Breaden onboard Craig Leggett's cruising cat Gotcha was able to get two races under way on the Saturday before a fierce wind ended the day. Steve Brewin and Nathan van Kerkhof on Brusy showed why they are World class champions and Kimberley Russell confirmed her recent strong form at the Nationals with a fighting 6th on Wind Dragon before equipment failure saw her dump a mast into the bay.

Sunday dawned bright and clear and a course was set early resulting in three good races. Local boy Zac Breaden on his 227 Taipan Zax surprised everyone except his family by upsetting the bigger boats, his consistent quick pace earning him the title of Regatta Champion for 2018.

Newcastle's David Culip and Ethan McAuliff's Nacra Business Time kept him honest though, as did Zac's brother Sam and fellow club member Mark Colecliffe.

Kurnell's Chris and Richard Brewin and Murray and Danielle Makin made the podium on their F18s as did David Morgan and Cameron Kaul from Queens Lake.

We always welcome Wang's McAdams and thank F18 Mother Hen Leanne Gould.

Tanilba Bay Sailing Club thank all competitors for attending and displaying great sportsmanship, also Mel Breaden Physiotherapy & Club Lemon Tree for their support.
